3 UK soldiers could face war crimes trial

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Ministry of Defense says three British soldiers have been referred to a senior prosecutor over allegations that they abused Iraqis during the Iraq war and could eventually face war crimes charges.

The government says the referral was made last month but refused to give any details about the soldiers, the nature of the alleged abuse, or when or exactly where in Iraq it is alleged to have occurred.

The acknowledgment came after a government lawyer acting for the Ministry of Defense told Britain’s High Court that war crimes charges were one of several options open to the government if accusations against the soldiers were substantiated.

The government is being sued over its refusal to launch a public inquiry into the alleged abuse of dozens of Iraqi detainees by British forces.
