Bed bugs have become a major source of frustration for travelers in the US in recent months. Cases of bed bugs are popping up all across the country, and one of the groups being hit the hardest by the problem are gamblers.
With all of the new casinos that have been built around the US in the past couple of years, gamblers have started to travel around to try and find easy casinos where they can make money playing poker. Patrons in their hometown casinos recognize their faces and run from the action.
As they travel around the country, many of these gamblers have come across bed bugs at the hotels where they stay. With visits that may only last a night or two, the last thing gamblers want is to wake up in the morning in a hotel where bed bugs have run rampant.
The bed bug registry is a site online that documents cases of bed bugs, but the site does not verify the complaints. Despite the lack of scientific evidence, more and more gamblers are using the registry as a guide when they pull into a new town.
“I am on the road an average of fifteen days a month, and sometimes that can span five or six different states,” said Mario Blandon, a gambler from Florida. “When I go to the casinos in these states, I play for sometimes sixteen hours at a time, so it is important that I get in some good sleep during the little time I am in the hotel room. That is why I started checking the bed bug registry.”
Blandon explained how he had never worried about bed bugs until he was at a hotel last year where he was traumatized by bed bugs. Now, Blandon insists that he will not check into a hotel until he has done his homework regarding bed bugs.
Hotels are usually part of casino expansion, but many gamblers like to stay at hotels not connected to the casino. Others like to be known as high rollers and often get their hotel rooms comped at the casinos.
