Wiz Khalifa is in jail after being arrested for felony drug possession.
Rapper Wiz Khalifa … or is it Wix? (real name Cameron Jabril Thomaz) was arrested on felony drug possession charges last night in North Carolina following a concert he had put on at East Carolina University in Greenville.
Wiz Khalifa had finished his show, had gotten paid for his performance in front of the standing room only crowd at the University’s Wright Auditorium and was on his way back to his tour bus with his band when he was stopped by ECU police officers. They told him they smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from his bus and wanted to search it. The search turned up more than 60 grams of pot (around 2 ounces) so Wiz and the nine members of his band/entourage were all arrested.
In the past Wix Khalifa has boasted about his love for pot even claiming that he spends upwards of $10,000 per month buying weed. He even recently released his own brand of jumbo size rolling papers. He was charged with one felony count of trafficking in marijuana, one felony count of maintaining a dwelling/vehicle/place for the sale or storage of marijuana and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He posted the $300,000 bond was released about 8am EST Tuesday morning.
Wiz Khalifa was recently voted by MTV viewers as the hottest new upcoming MC of 2010. His current single “Black and Yellow” is getting heavy rotation on hip hop radio stations and his most recent album Deal or No Deal topped the Itunes rap charts.
Possession of more than 1.5 ounces of pot in North Carolina can be punishable by up to 12 months in jail, but it is likely that prosecutors will seek a plea deal instead. Keith Stroup, Legal counsel for NORML, a marijuana legalization advocacy group, said that a plea deal makes sense. He points out that a joint takes about 1 gram of pot to make so they had about 60 joints on the bus. With the number of people on the bus and the fact that they were away from home and the normal source they use to buy their pot not close by it is easy to see why they would have that much not be selling. He feels that unless there were baggies, scales or other evidence that he was selling the pot that the prosecution would most likely allow him to plead down to personal possession.
Recently California voters turned down prop 19 which would have legalized marijuana in California. While a guy like Wiz would love to see something like that, it is clear that much of the public isn’t quite ready for. Wiz Khalifa himself should probably keep his weed habits to himself from now on. Now that he has been busted and everyone knows he loves weed like he does, the authorities are going to keep a very close eye on him. There was no word on what charges any of the members of his band/entourage were hit with.
